The Bar Construction and Affine Stacks

1.1. Let V be a complete discrete valuation ring with perfect residue field of characteristic p > 0 and fraction field K of characteristic 0. Fix an algebraic closure K ⊂ K. Let X/V be a smooth proper scheme, and let D ⊂ X be a divisor with normal crossings over V . Assume that XK is connected. Let X ◦ denote X −D and assume given a point x ∈ X◦(V ). We can then consider the pro-unipotent funda...

Unipotent Degrees of Imprimitive Complex Reflection Groups

In the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type G(q) the unipotent characters play a fundamental role. Their degrees, seen as polynomials in q, are only dependent on the Weyl group of G(q). G. Lusztig (Astérisque 212 (1993) 191–203) has shown that one can define unipotent degrees for a general finite Coxeter group. In this article we construct, for the two infinite series of n-dimensi...

The Hopf Algebra of a Uniserial Group

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Hopf algebra of a finite commutative infinitesimal unipotent k-group scheme which is uniserial, i.e., which has a unique composition series. As there is only one simple finite commutative infinitesimal unipotent group scheme (namely αp := ker {F : Ga → Ga} , with Ga being the additive gr...

A Geometric Construction of Semistable Extensions of Crystalline Representations

We study unipotent fundamental groups for open varieties over p-adic fields with base point degenerating to the boundary. In particular, we show that the Galois representations associated to the étale unipotent fundamental group are semistable.

Se p 20 04 The motivic fundamental group of P 1 \ { 0 , 1 , ∞ } and the theorem of Siegel

One of the strong motivations for studying the arithmetic fundamental groups of algebraic varieties comes from the hope that they will provide group-theoretic access to Diophantine geometry. This is most clearly expressed by the so-called 'section conjecture' of Grothendieck: Let F be a number field and let X→Spec(F) be a smooth hyperbolic curve. After some choice of base point, we get an exact...
